Connecting Mental Health & Sport

One hour. One course. A lifetime of impact for mental well-being on and off the field.
At Connect Sport, we envision a sports community where mental health literacy is embedded at every level—empowering athletes, coaches, and parents to create supportive environments, foster resilience, and take informed action. By increasing knowledge, reducing stigma, and building strong connections.

We aim to equip the next generation to thrive mentally and emotionally, both on and off the field.

Our Mission

Connect Sport is dedicated to strengthening mental health literacy in the sports community. Through evidence-based education and practical resources, we support coaches, parents, and athletes in building resilience, reducing stigma, and creating accessible, inclusive environments for mental well-being. By fostering shared learning and informed action, we ensure that mental health is prioritized in sports and in life, empowering everyone to take care of their own and others’ well-being.

Empowerment through Accessibility

Knowledge is the foundation of action. At Connect Sport, we support mental health literacy for all parts of the sports community, ensuring that it is widely available and easy to use. By increasing knowledge about mental health problems and disorders, we empower individuals to recognize changes in behavior, create positive environments, and prepare themselves to respond when a youth reaches out. A well-informed community is one where everyone has the confidence to seek help, offer support, and contribute to a culture of well-being.

Resilience through Informed Action

Sports is a great place to foster resilience. At Connect Sport, we aim to facilitate that process by equipping coaches, parents, and athletes with the knowledge and tools they need to face challenges with confidence. By increasing mental health literacy, we help build resilience through informed action. Coaches can create positive environments with reasonable expectations, parents can support help-seeking behaviors, and athletes can apply what they learn to manage stress and support their peers. Whether it’s a coach checking in with an athlete, a parent recognizing changes in their child, or a teammate modeling a positive attitude, informed action helps young athletes develop the emotional strength they need to succeed in sport and in life.

Shared Literacy through Connection

Mental health literacy grows through education and open conversations. At Connect Sport, we equip coaches, parents, and athletes with the tools to understand well-being and support each other. Coaches who listen and model positive behavior help normalize mental health discussions. Parents can recognize changes in their child’s well-being and create an open space for dialogue. Athletes can support teammates and seek help when needed. By using inclusive language, challenging stigma, and connecting youth to resources, we ensure no one faces challenges alone.

Empowering Communities

Connect Sport is more than a training program — it’s a movement to make mental health literacy a core part of youth sport. With a strong foundation, growing demand, and a scalable, sustainable model, we are ready to expand our reach and deepen our impact. By partnering with communities, organizations, and supporters who share our vision, we can ensure that every young athlete — no matter where they play — has the support they need to thrive.

What People Think About Us

Testimonials from coaches, organizations and parents about Connect Sport and what we do.

Kent

Parent, LLoydminster
Real life feel to mental health.
This program acts as a short but important reminder of key indicators of what a mental health situation looks like. This program brought a real life feel to mental health and the stigmas around it. It made you look at the questions from another perspective. We all feel or deal with mental health in some way in our lives, and this program reminds us of our role as supporter and patient of mental health and how we can get help before it negatively affects our lives or someone else’s around us.

Marcus

Coach, Calgary Northstars
Connect Sport was an enlightening experience.
This platform offered valuable tools that better equipped my staff to better support the mental health challenges of our players.

Rohit Sharma

Coach
Arming our coaching staffs with better tools to support mental health literacy has been a great investment into their development to become better coaches far more valuable than any X’s and O’s training would have. We will continue to work directly with Connect Sport as more support is needed in this area in sport.

Part of a much needed shift.
Connect Sport has been a huge part of a much needed shift in the mental health support of our athletes during the 2022/23 season. We currently host 12 minor hockey programs within CNHA with 220 players and 50 coaches. Following our Connect Sport Coaches on boarding I received calls from a large number of our coaching staffs thanking us for this resource. I have also had a member for each of our staff outline at least one instance where Connect Sport training has helped with better Connect and support an athlete on their team this season.

Asking for Help can be Difficult

Due to stigma surrounding mental disorders and the limited knowledge of mental health literacy many adults and youth do not access pathways to care. Few people know how to talk about mental health or seek resources to support themselves or others.
